God of War Ragnarok is still "coming this year", according to animation director Bruno Velazquez. In a response to fans on Twitter, the comment comes after Cory Barlog issued an update yesterday to say the game is not ready to be shown just yet. This raised concerns for some PlayStation 5, PS4 players that the sequel won't be ready to release in 2022.
While Barlog explained Santa Monica Studio isn't ready to show God of War Ragnarok just yet, he did say it'll be shown as soon as it's ready. "I guarantee you, the moment, the very second that we have something that we're ready to share, we're going to share it with you." With Velazquez's comment taken into account, it sounds like the next time we see the title, the actual release may not be too far off.
The game has already been delayed once, out of 2021 and into this year — although, a release last year never seemed likely. Since then, Sony has continued to reiterate a 2022 launch for God of War Ragnarok. Reliable journalist Jason Schreier is also confident the sequel will be out before the end of the year. Of course, a delay isn't going to be announced through an individual developer's Twitter account, but it's still positive to see the team on the 2022 train.
Where do you fall? Do you believe God of War Ragnarok will launch for PS5, PS4 this year, or is another delay on its way? Decide in the comments below.

I don’t believe it’s coming this year.
Silly Bruno. Internet experts say it won't.
Santa Monica have confirmed it’s coming this year and have reconfirmed it’s coming this year numerous times now. It would be ludicrous to think otherwise. They are clearly holding back on showing anymore off until a huge blow out event.
Sony is definitely going to have a big event for this game. I’m guessing it comes out closer to the holidays?
Cant wait to smash Thors face in...I can see this dropping for christmas easy.
@mrtennis1990 I'm expecting it no earlier than the final few months of the year.
Probarbly keeping it for christmas time in the hope that there will be a few more consoles about. If there is, this game will help sell them no problem.
I reckon they won't want to go up against Two Point Campus in August, so it will be a September release....
I don't see why it couldn't come this year. It was originally planned for release last year and it's not like they are starting from scratch either. From what little we have seen it looks like it's just building off of what 2018 already established. They probably aren't showing too much because it's going to sell well anyway so why bother? Plus they would have had about 4 years to develop it which is about how long it takes to make AAA games like this one so overall I'm pretty confident it will come this year.
I have significant doubts given they haven't shown much of anything.
Just like starfield that's coming this year yet nothing has been shown of that either.
I think both will be delayed, they are just waiting for the right time to announce it
Yeah, no. Not buying it. Unless they're planning a huge marketing push during the final few months of the year, then this is definitely a 2023 game.
Someone tell them "this year" is now just about 1 third over, so if they are going to make comments about "this year" they should narrow it down way more than that.
What's the cutoff for Keighly's award show, Nov 1st? Probably release it Nov 2 to avoid Elden Ring. Should be able to hold it's own against BotW2.
OK, last years date was Nov 19th, so... Nov 20th?🤷♂️

They haven't announced this years date yet, maybe they're waiting to find out. The power of Geoff Keighly 😂
Santa Monica has a history of staying pretty quiet after initial announcement until near to launch. God of War (2018) had trailers at E3 2016, 2017 and Paris Games Week but other than that there was mostly silence. Their big marketing push didn't properly start until January 2018 and it came out 3 months later in April 2018.
Bethesda are similar, don't start their marketing push until their game is almost ready.
If they're following the same pattern I'd expect something around E3 and then expect the marketing hype train around 3 months before launch. Latest September if still launching this year. i.e. there's PLENTY of time.
How can they say they have nothing to show but be releasing that same year? Come on, you’ve definitely got a fair bit you can show otherwise it’s not ready and thus this year has no chance for a release, surely.
I think Sony's waiting for big 3rd party timing. This year is a World Cup year for football but this time in November/December instead of June/July so FIFA (game) timing may change, CoD is rumoured to be releasing early this year, etc. so Sony will time GoW Ragnarok around that kind of stuff.
While it is kind of worrying that there's been no new footage, we're also nearing "event season" so it kind of makes sense that they're keeping the big announcement for their summer showcase. While I fully expect other cool announcements from Sony, it's hard to imagine anything topping Ragnarok and they don't want the showcase to seem underwhelming just because they've shown the new GoW a short while earlier.
Makes sense, I guess.
@Voltan Makes perfect sense!
Cool.kratos the 🐐 👑 g.o.a.t.coming to a ps4 and ps5 near you.another masterpiece coming.word up son
I'm guessing it'll be out Q4 of this year, right before holiday season.
@rjejr Devs really don't care if they release their game before the cut off date for tga.
It would go against zelda next year anyways.
This won't get delayed. Spider-man 2 will tho. Industry standard.
I'm placing my bets on Ragnaroktober
@itsfoz There is a difference between having something that is 'ready' to show that will benefit the Public perception of a game - a 'solid' sequence of game-play that is running at a consistent frame rate without any 'visual' issues either and just showing an early build without all the optimisation and tweaks necessary to represent the game more accurately.
When we saw Spider-man, the Puddles became an issue and led to accusations of 'downgrades' from what was promised by the trailer. That's not the 'only' example, but most 'gameplay' trailers are specifically selected sequences/areas of the game that have been taken out of the main game and then worked on to try and make that small section be more representative of the final game.
All this means to me is that at this point in time, the Developers haven't got 'something' that they are willing to share at this point that is going to 'help' them. No one wants to see a trailer with maybe place-holder assets, not that well optimised 'yet' with visual and performance issues - the usual when you are pulling all those different aspects all together into a cohesive 'game'. Making sure all the animations work properly, all the collision detection works etc..
I’d rather they focus on working on developing the game vs giving us a slice to show off.
My bets are on October/November. Just hope Sony's first party has more in store for us this year.
I'm just going to wait for a release date to be announced but due to the current climate of things I can't help but cast doubt over a 2022 release.
@Martijn87 maybe the last of us stuff but I’m sure we would have already known about things. There’s still the sly cooper and infamous rumors but I doubt they are for this year
@twitchtvpat
Factions and the remake could release this year but it could also be that they wasn't those to be released in combination with the HBO series, Wich I think is delayed to 2023. Sly cooper and Infamous would be nice but yeah probably will be also released in 2023. Maybe sly cooper in the winter.. but hey maybe Sony will surprise us. There are still slot of projects they haven't announced yet from the studios that could be surprise releases out of nowhere.
Apparently they didn't reveal the release date for GOW 2018 until January 23rd 2018, and then it released on April 20th. So still plenty of time for it to come this year.
I really believe it will!
@Grumblevolcano I don’t think either of those events play any role into the eventual release of this game. This is a juggernaut that stands on its own and it will not compete with mind share or dollars of others.
@Chidoro Sony only seems to release games after September when there's new hardware launching. It's a reasonable prediction that they do this so they're not competing with the gigantic 3rd party juggernauts like CoD which are a lot bigger than Sony's 1st party games.
Perhaps these big companies are finally seeing the value of mystery and word of mouth. Just look at the buzz generated from a single video simply stating that SSM are…still working on the game. Endless marketing fuels an unsustainable hype machine that always collapses under its own weight. A sense of mystery combined with word of mouth fuels momentum - the Midas touch in the internet age.
Like the Cuphead DLC - I’ll believe it when I see it available for purchase.
I believe that it will come out this year... That is, until the inevitable delay announcement comes. Personally, I wouldn't mind if it was delayed. These cross-gen games could all benefit from a little more time in the oven.
That's not to suggest a last minute delay! Didn't Guerilla promise HZ:FW at the end of 2021? I may be totally wrong though.
@itsfoz Show a trailer now, then people expect another one in two months, and another one before release, and a launch trailer, and more.
It's a sequel, so you know more or less what to expect. I assume they just don't want to spoil too much, so why reveal stuff now, when you can also wait until it's a month or two away from release?
@Grumblevolcano being that the first GoW came out in April, and other giant titles like LoU 2 in June, Horizon in Jan, i don’t think that is the case.
They definitely don’t care about a cross release with CoD, GoW will stand on its own and sell in any environment, against any potential competitors.
If it does, GOTY will be between GOW and Elden Ring.
Good times!
@Chidoro I think you misunderstood my comment, I was saying games are only released after September (i.e. October - December) when there's hardware attached (e.g. Miles Morales, Sackboy and Demon's Souls launched in November alongside the PS5). When there's no hardware attached, Sony only releases games in January - September.
@themightyant Sony also wanted to move to a strategy where they don't announce/hype games too early. I think that's where they're going with their future
Every year they keep saying "this year" and they're bound to be right... eventually.
There's only one window of launch this year, and that's in September.
But it's already April, already too late for that... the marketing campaign should have already started by now... but they're not even ready to show a few minutes of new gameplay.
And it will not launch during the holydays as many are hoping. It's Sony's biggest icon, it has to stand out, not be mixed up in a period of the year when gamer's attentions are split in so many directions.
As I've said in previous comments, imo GOW Ragnarok will have fake 2022 release dates, but in the end, most likely for polishing reasons, it will be pushed to Spring 2023.... a period of the year in which all of the other GOW games were released since 2005.
@itsfoz probably because they already have a set date, maybe the big June show and don't want to spoil any information now.
@Shinnok789 they actually announced release date for GOW in January and released in April.
well, usually marketing starts making a hard push 6 months leading up to release... sony will not release this in decemeber for obvious reasons, so i have to imagine novermber is the release date. i have no dobut we will be getting plenty of information in early may at the latest if that is the case. sony has no other tentpole releases planned this year so i don't think it can afford to miss this release window.
@RBMango no worries bro. I’m buying it day one regardless if they have a big event or show nothing. I’ve played every title - nothing to hold out for.
@themightyant And somehow Bethesda games are almost always a broken mess on release Skyrim still is fully fixed. 🤪
I won't believe it until the game is in my hands at this rate...
@Flaming_Kaiser Considering the size, scope and sheer breadth of choice available i'm always amazed Bethesda games aren't MORE janky and broken tbh. Systems upon systems upon systems.
That said the bar has been raised. While they don't come close in terms of gameplay options and choice games like the Witcher 3, recent Assassins Creeds and even things like Horizon Forbidden West have shown that you can still have a huge scope without too much jank and the graphical expectations of open worlds have been skyrocketed. Hopefully Bethesda react well.
@themightyant Sorry i dont see it that way anymore consoles are more like a PC now then ever and if you cant fix a game in 3 generations im kinda baffled.
I never really had a special feeling about Bethesda their games where always broken beyond believe Skyrim on the PS3 sold the deal for me what a joke.
Their games are just dissapointing Fallout 4 on PS4 we cant fix the mist their fix just remove it. Im not bothered about having the best graphics but i do have standards how things should run.
Maybe their last game will be great but i wont be able to play it so that would be a pity if its good. Bethesda to me is nothing special because everything i played what they made was broken in some way.
Skyrim never really clicked with me the only game i liked was Fallout Shelter how funny is that a pay to play game.
@Flaming_Kaiser that’s ok, I get where you’re coming from, we all have different views and tastes.
Despite the jank Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim and Fallout 3 have given me some of the best gaming memories in all of gaming. Shame their recent output has been so much worse.
Whereas I played fallout shelter obsessively for about a week but then realised how shallow it was, mobile time gated mechanics tied to MTX felt cynical and meaningless to me. Again that’s ok we all like different things.
@themightyant There are two games that i want before i die Legend of Dragoon and Dino Crisis. 🤣
Also why Square Enix does not release Parasite Eve and the remaster on PC for the console but they released these dumpsterfire liveservice games instead....
